To Own a Dragon

I recently read a book by Donald Miller called To Own a Dragon.
First i Highly recommend any male to read this book as soon as possible.
The book is written for guys who grew up without a father.
So as a Foster Parent at the time, i knew it would be a valuable asset to my library.
He makes it to a point in his book about becoming a man he asking the question
What does it take to be a real Man?
He got many of the answers that most of us consider being a real man,
such as courageous,
strong, and
determined.
Each time he replies to the answer
"that is what it takes to be a good man, but what does it take to be a real man?"
He finally breaks down and answers his own question.
He says "to be a real man, you have to have..."
(dramatic pause, drumroll, Lets go to comercial break, okay were back restate question, more dramatic Pause, reality TV eat your heart out)
"a penis"
You see it is a lot to live up to to be a man,
especially when you grow around some really good Men who take care of their families,
and provide,
and lead.
It is very intimidating to a young boy to know that one day he is going to attempt to follow in those footsteps. Or if you grow up without that,
you really don't know what it looks like to be a real man
and it is still intimidating because you feel inadequate.
But Miller makes a great point with this because most of us grow up thinking we don't stand a chance,
but we already have what it takes to be a real man,
Therefore that gap between boyhood and the High standards of being a good man
is possible for any male.
We go from not knowing if we are a real man,
much less a good man
to seeing that becoming a good man is much closer than we had thought.

Now granted the road between a real man and a good man is a hard road,
and it takes a great deal of discipline.
But knowing that each and every one of us are already real men,
makes the task of becoming a good man more achievable.
To go from the inadequacy of boyhood
to knowing for a fact that you are a real man
can and will boost confidence,
and courage,
and leadership.
This is a beautiful thought,
and true manhood is still intimidating.
But knowing that God has entrusted you with the qualities of a "real man" from the beginning,
allows you to focus on becoming a good man

I'm thrilled to see your page, too, and i'll be keeping you in my prayers as you're hosting those boys.

thanks again, and have an excellent day!
